Tech Layoffs Continue: Cloud Software Group Announces Massive Job Cuts
The ongoing wave of tech layoffs has shown no signs of slowing down in the new year. Just last week, we reported on massive layoff announcements from Amazon and Salesforce, with thousands of employees being let go. Yesterday, CRN reported that Cloud Software Group was undertaking massive layoffs. Today, the company confirmed that it was laying off 15% of its workforce.
Who is Affected?
Although the company refused to share specific numbers, it appears that thousands of employees are affected by the layoffs. Cloud Software Group was formed last year after PE firms Vista Equity Partners and Evergreen Coast Capital (an affiliate of Elliott Investment Management) took Citrix private in a $16.5 billion deal, the third biggest enterprise M&A deal of last year.
What Happened?
At the time of the acquisition, the firms indicated that they would be combining Citrix with Tibco, another enterprise firm that Vista had purchased previously. However, it seems that cost-cutting was always on the cards. Constellation Research analyst Holger Mueller told TechCrunch at the time: "The combo has a lot of assets to play with on the tech side, especially with Citrix’s virtualization and the future of work. But it will be all about execution, and we will see in a few months if Vista and Elliott are undertaking a go-forward and growth strategy, or if they will save costs and ‘milk’ the install base."
The Reaction
When Cloud Software Group CEO Tom Krause confirmed the layoffs via a post on the company’s website, he acknowledged that it was not an easy decision to make. "Yesterday, we notified roughly 15% of the total Cloud Software Group workforce that their roles have been eliminated or made redundant as part of our planning process for the new company," he wrote. Krause continued: "Please know that these decisions were not taken lightly. Rather, they were practical business decisions designed to strengthen the combined companies."
The Impact
While it’s true that some job cuts are necessary in any large-scale merger or acquisition, it’s worth noting that each of those jobs was held by an individual who is now out of work today. They join the thousands of other tech workers who have been laid off in recent months.
But There May Be a Silver Lining
Multiple reports have stated over the last several months that laid-off tech workers are quickly finding new employment opportunities. This could be due to the fact that many companies are looking for skilled professionals, and those with experience in the tech industry are in high demand.
The Future of Cloud Software Group
Cloud Software Group has confirmed that it will be eliminating duplicate positions across the two companies and aligning its product roadmap to meet the needs of top customers. While this may seem like a cost-cutting measure, it’s actually an attempt to streamline operations and make the company more efficient.

The ongoing tech layoffs have left many wondering what the future holds. While some companies are thriving, others are struggling to stay afloat. One thing is certain: the tech industry will continue to evolve, and only time will tell how this wave of job cuts will impact the sector.
